the tutors on showtime
I’ve been wanting to watch the Tutors series on Showtime for a long time, so I finally got showtime through my cable tv provider this month. Unfortunately, season one wasn’t available on demand only season two. I have been studying this era of history for quite sometime. I’ve read many books on King Henry VIII of England and his wives as well as his heirs, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I, since Masterpiece theater came out with their series in the 1960s. I’ve also taken a course on Tutor England. The Tutors’ story told on Showtime is basically historically correct. Although their were some discrepancies. I watched short videos of The Tutors season one on showtime.com. One thing I found that was wrong in one of the episodes, Henry sent his best friend Charles Brandon to occupany his younger sister, Mary to marry the King of Portugal. Unless this changed in the full episode, what really happened was Mary married the King of France who was 60 years of age. Mary only agreed if she would be free to marry for love after the King of France died. When the King of France died, 3 months into the marriage, Henry sent Brandon to bring his sister back to England. Brandon and Mary secretly married. When Henry found out, he was going to execute Brandon for treason, as it was treason to marry any one of high birth without the permission of the King. However, Henry only banished Brandon and Mary from court. Other than this and maybe a few other incidents such as Ann Boleyn finding Jane Seymour in the arms of Henry the VIII kissing which was suggested being the reason for her misscarriage. In all my readings, I have never found this incident. All the books simply say that Anne miscarried right after Henry fell from his horse. However, Ann was aware of Henry’s interest in Jane. Another discrepancy, I have never found in my readings where one of the men, accused of adultury with Anne and executed, was in fact working for the Pope to bring Anne down. It might be true or believed to be true but I have never found it in any of the history books I’ve read. I do know one thing for sure, showtime has a lot of material to cover if they intend to cover the entire Tutor dynasty which lasted over 100 years and ended when Elizabeth I died in 1603. Jame I seceeded her and began the Stuart reign but he too was a decended of Henry VII. His grandmother was Henry VIII’s sister, Margaret Tudor.
